• Why winter is a good time to have a fence installed

Many of us don’t think about having work done in our yards in the winter time, but some outdoor chores are better done when the weather’s cool. If you’ve been putting off fence installation until the spring, for instance, you might want to rethink your schedule. There are plenty of good reasons to install a new fence when the weather is cool.

    • Contractors aren’t as busy in the winter. This means it may be easier to find someone to do the work, and you may even be offered a discounted cost for the labor. The job also may be finished more quickly, because contractors will often commit a larger crew to the project when they’re not stretched too thin by other projects.
    • Work done in the winter is easier on your plants. When most of your landscape has gone dormant, your plants are less likely to be damaged if they need to be relocated or trimmed back. What’s more, the grass won’t be as dramatically affected by equipment and a work crew in the winter. Then, too, you’ll know if anything needs to be replaced well in advance of spring, so you can get it planted early and well-established by summer.
    • When you get the work done in the winter, you’ll be better able to enjoy the spring. Having your new fence installed in the winter means that by spring, you’ll be able to truly relax and enjoy your improved yard. You can even invite friends and family to join you, without having to postpone until the new fence is finished.

  • How to Tell if it is Time for a Fence Replacement

Putting in a fence is a big investment, so most homeowners try to keep their fences standing for as long as possible. With time, though, even the most well-maintained fence will need to be replaced. How can you tell if it’s time for a new fence?

    • Your fence has started leaning. As time passes, your fence will start to weaken and lean. This can make it vulnerable, especially in seasons of punishing wind and rain. You can adjust the fence posts to temporarily fix this, but it’s likely that the fence is already damaged to a point that requires replacement.
    • The signs of rot are visible. One of the first signs that your fence needs to be replaced is rot. Wood is very vulnerable to rot, and once decay begins, the fence can deteriorate quickly. Sometimes you can catch it quickly enough to replace a section of the fence, but it’s often spotted too late to reverse the damage.
    • When the wood changes color, it’s time to replace the fence. Especially if the wood hasn’t been properly preserved, wooden fencing can discolor because of sun, rust, or fading paint. You may be able to treat it for a temporary fix, but it is unlikely that you can restore it to its original state.
    • If some of the panels go missing, it’s best to replace the whole thing. There’s really no point to a fence that’s missing panels, because it no longer does what it’s meant to do, whether that’s keeping pets and children in, keeping people and animals out, or providing privacy or security. You can replace one panel, but the problem can reoccur if you don’t replace the whole fence.
    • Other visible signs of wear and tear mean it’s time to replace the fence. You can maintain it, repair it, and replace missing parts, but the wear and tear of everyday life eventually runs down your fence. Eventually, the maintenance costs will build up and be more expensive than replacement, so if you’re doing frequent repairs, it’s time to consider replacing the fence.
    • Sometimes you simply no longer like the fence. If it doesn’t fit with the aesthetics of your home and garden, it’s perfectly fine to decide to replace the fence. Your fence doesn’t have to be in disrepair to be replaced, you can switch it out just to update the look of your

  • How to Care for your Fence

When you install a new wood fence, you’ll be amazed at how great it looks in your yard. How can you keep it looking great? With the proper maintenance, you can keep your fence in good shape for decades.

    • Stain it as soon as possible. When you stain your wood fence soon after installation, you’re protecting it from both dry and wet rot. Linseed based oil stain is the best way to go because it restores the wood’s natural protective oils. The stain should be reapplied about once a year.
    • Keep it clean. Whenever you see leaves or other debris on your fence, clean it. It’s important to keep dirt and moisture from accumulating because that accumulation can lead to wet rot, mold, and mildew. Using a pressure washer is very effective, especially if you first apply a solution of white vinegar and water. Allow the mixture to sit for ten minutes before using the pressure washer.
    • Mold and mildew can be insidious. Even the best-kept fences can develop these issues, and it’s important to catch them early. Inspect your fence regularly, and if you see mold or mildew, wash it with soap and water, followed by mildew cleaner and then rinsing well.
    • If you paint your fence you should plan on repainting it every three to four years. This helps to maintain the appearance of the fence, as well as providing protection. If it peels or chips, you can just touch it up, scraping away the old paint, sanding the area, and putting on a new coat of paint. After you paint, it’s smart to reseal, using a paint spraying unit.
    • Keep up with repairs. Fences expand and contract with the weather, so nails and fasteners tend to get loose. Drive in loose nails, and replace any that are missing. Inspect your fence regularly and replace any sections that have split, warped, or rotted.
    • Be wary of pests. Birds nests should be cleared away immediately. If you see termite activity, you can use borax to deter them, but if they’ve dug in, you should seek professional assistance. Clearing leaves and debris will help you spot pests early so that you can manage them.

  • How to Decide what Fence is Right for You

Installing a new seems simple enough, doesn’t it? In truth, there’s a lot to consider when deciding on the fence that best meets your needs and fits your yard. First, you’ll need to determine whether a permit is necessary before you put in a fence, and exactly where your property lines fall. Then, too, you’ll need to make sure there are no underground utility lines that might interfere with your fence’s installation. Once you’re ready to put in the fence, though, which fence should you buy? It’s best to take your time choosing the right fence and think about why you need it.

    • You might need a fence for privacy. For maximum privacy, choose a fence designed without spaces between the boards. Of course, you can also choose a closely spaced lattice if you plan to combine it with lush climbing plants. Base the height of your new fence on the slope of your yard and your neighbors’ yards, taking into account any applicable building codes. If you don’t need the security of a gate, you can always install offset fences to give you a path while still blocking others from seeing in, and if you don’t want a tall fence all the way around your yard, you can choose a stair-step design that only puts taller fence sections where you need them.
    • A new fence may be a good way to block the wind. If you’re just trying to keep the breeze away from a seating area, your fence doesn’t need to be especially tall. If you only want protection from the wind and not privacy, you may want to go with glass.
    • Security may be your top priority. If that’s the case, go for a fence that’s at least eight feet tall, with a sturdy gate that locks. Skip the horizontal rails on the outside, because those can make a fence easier to climb.
    • You may be trying to contain your dogs. This can be a tricky proposition, and what you’ll need is largely subjective. If your dogs are small and generally content to hang out in the yard, you can get away with a short fence. For big dogs or jumpers, you’ll need to consider their abilities when determining how high the fence should be. If your dogs are diggers, the fence should be buried at least six inches underground, or you should do some hardscaping along the bottom of it. If your dogs are excitable, you might need a fence that blocks their view of the outside world.
    • Your new fence might be designed to keep deer out. Deer are good at jumping, so if they’re a problem in your area, you may want to go with a tall privacy fence. You might also consider a hedge along the fence because while deer can jump to heights of about eight feet, they aren’t great at the long jump.
    • Keeping kids out of the pool may be your primary concern. If this is the case, you have a very specific guideline to follow. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, you need a fence that’s at least 48 inches high, with no more than 1 ¾ inches between pieces and nothing that could provide handholds or footholds for climbing. The gate should also be self-closing and self-latching and should open outward from the pool.
