How to Repaint Your Wood Fence
Wood fences are study and durable, but over time, the elements will take a toll, and you will find that you need to repaint your fence. Although there is some preparation involved, repainting your wooden fence isn’t as hard as you may imagine—in fact, it is one of the easiest wooden fence repairs you can make. Here is a look at how you can give your fence a facelift with painting.
Clean the Fence
Your wooden fence needs to be as clean as possible before you start painting, so that you get a smooth finish and don’t trap a lot of dirt and debris under the paint. The most effective way to clean your fence is to use a power washer. With a power washer, you can loosen the dirt that has become entrenched in the crevices of the fence and make sure you start with a smooth, clean surface.
Cover Non-Fence Parts
If your fence runs against your home or has parts you don’t want to paint, such as brick posts or gate handles, cover these up before you paint. Plastic sheeting can be used over windows and other large obstacles, while you can tape small sheets of plastic over handles and other small features. If your neighbors have any items in their yard that could be affected by paint sprays, give them a heads-up that they may want to cover their items.
Use a Paint Sprayer
You can paint a wooden fence by hand, but a paint sprayer makes the job much faster and easier. Use the sprayer to apply thin coats, so that the paint doesn’t drip. You may need more than one coat to achieve your desired coverage. Allow the paint to dry for about four hours between coats for an even application.
