  • Fence Staining: Maintaining the Look & Feel of Your Wood Fence

Every homeowner wants their wood fences to look beautiful, even after years of wear and tear. Consider the following benefits of staining the wood fence so it will last for many more years and look as stunning as the day it was installed.

    • Preserve the New Wood Look

Simply by staining your beautiful wood fence, you can keep it looking like new even years after purchase. If your fence is starting to look a little too weathered, then staining will not only add color, but also protect against color loss. Both old and new wood fences can benefit from staining, and stain should be reapplied approximately every five years to maintain its look.

    • Protect Against the Elements

An unstained cedar fence will look beautiful, but it won’t stand up to the elements as well as a wood fence that is stained or sealed. Staining keeps the wood safe from the sun and waterproofed against rain, which will also help prevent mildew growth. Special ultraviolet protection means the color won’t fade. You may also ask your fence installers about sealants that can protect against termite damage.

    • Increase the Value of Your Home

Not only does a stained wood fence retain its aesthetic appeal longer than an unstained fence, but will also increase the value of your home. If you are thinking of selling your home, or if you know that it might one day be a possibility, then staining your wood fence will increase the value significantly. Staining is an affordable investment that will definitely pay for itself in the future.

  • Important Information When Looking to Purchase a Fence

There are many different improvements you can make to your home on the inside and out.  When looking to purchase a fence for your yard, whether for safety, privacy, or decorative purposes, there are a few important documents you need to have ready first.  One of the most important documents needed when installing your fence around your property is your plat of survey.  A plat of survey is a legal document you receive when you close on your home.  The plat of survey shows where your property lines are located on your lot.  Normally, you cannot close on a home without a plat of survey, however, if you purchase a foreclosure, the plat of survey is not required.  A plat of survey is important for fence installation because it ensures that your fence is installed accurately and in accordance with where your property lines are located.  You will also need a copy of your plat of survey to take to the village if a permit is required for your fence.

If you do not have a plat of survey, the easiest way to try and obtain one, is to contact the building department for your municipality.  Sometimes, the city, or village, or town will have a plat of survey on file for your home.  If your municipality does not have a copy of your plat of survey on file, you will want to contact a local survey company and order one.

Even if you already have a fence in your yard, it is still a great idea to have your plat of survey available for the salesperson to look at.  Many times, the old fence has been installed within your property lines, but there are some instances, where the old fence was installed incorrectly and part or the entire fence may actually be outside your property lines and on your neighbor’s property.  Having the plat of survey as a reference will clear up any questions regarding the property lines and property pin placement for your yard.

Another important question to ask yourself when looking to install a fence is, “Do I live in a homeowner’s association (HOA) neighborhood?”  If yes, chances are, there are rules as to which type of fence and which style of fence is allowed in your neighborhood.  HOA neighborhoods normally have a book that is given to you with all the rules and regulations pertaining to home improvements.  Having that information handy will help the salesperson to work with you when choosing the perfect and acceptable fence for your yard.

One final area to think about when looking to install a fence in your yard is the question of is your house on a corner lot?   Most municipalities have specific rules and regulations for fence requirements on corner lots.  Usually, most cities, villages and towns have information regarding corner lot fencing on their websites, or you can call your municipality’s building department to find out specific information for your corner lot.

These are just a few ideas to ensure that the fence estimate you receive is accurate and acceptable for your neighborhood and lot location.

  • Wooden Fence Repair: Indentifying Your Fence Repair Needs

It’s a good idea to perform routine repair and maintenance on your wood fence to help it last for a lifetime. Look for problem areas like cracked paint or splinters that might need to be scraped away, sanded, and repainted. Make sure there are no loose nuts or bolts, and if there are, tighten them right away. Inspect the entire fence to see if there is any rotten wood, which will need to be replaced to prevent termite damage. Take a final look over the fence to ensure everything is in working order.

    • Wrought Iron Fence

Choosing a wrought iron fence means you do not have to add any extra decoration. Many wrought iron fences have intricate scroll-like patterns and decorative ornaments atop each post. A wrought iron fence can give your backyard a whole new dimension of personality and beauty. Better yet, it can seriously withstand the elements. Wrought iron will be a little more expensive than other fences, but it will also be a worthwhile investment.

    • Ornamental Aluminum Fence

To get the look of a wrought iron fence without the cost, an ornamental aluminum fence is the way to go. Just like their more luxurious counterparts, an ornamental aluminum fence is durable and long-lasting, with little-to-no maintenance. This fence gives you security and is perfect for enclosing a backyard spa or pool. Aluminum fences also come in a variety of colors, from classic white to bronze, so it’s sure to match your landscaping.

    • Fencing Adornments

If you prefer the look of a wood fence, then you might like to decorate with an ornament that will draw the eye straight to your beautiful fence. Flowerpots, lanterns, and flags will all make nice additions to your fence. If you want to really stretch your creative muscles, then you could consider painting a mural on your fence. Don’t forget to add twinkling lights during the holiday season. A fence does not have to just be the border of your property; it can also be an addition to your home’s décor.
