Wood fences add a wonderful touch of natural beauty to any yard that aluminum and vinyl fences just can’t match. Staining is one of the most important actions you can take to keep the wood looking bright and fresh for many years to come. You should always look out for signs that your wood needs to be re-stained, such as these four:
Mildew is Growing
Wood stain is used to protect your fence posts from damage by the elements; without it, the wood absorbs precipitation such as melting snow and rain. If it doesn’t dry, wet wood is prone to growing mildew. If you find mildew on your fence, spray it down with a low-setting power washer and scrub it using a solution of one part bleach to two parts water. Wait for the fence to dry before applying stain.
Wood is Graying
Few things add more beauty to a home than a fence made from natural wood. However, as the elements wear the outer layers down, the wooden plank will stain and begin to take on an unpleasant grayish color. You can restore the color to the wood of your fence and make it look as good as new with a fresh coat of stain. There are a multitude of colors and shades available at hardware stores, so feel free to let your imagination run wild.
Planks are Sagging
Stain does more than just make a wood fence look nice. Without a layer of stain, wood will absorb moisture and swell and contract from fluctuating temperatures. When this happens, the planks change size and shape permanently and fit together differently than when they were first installed. They will thus appear to sag. Stain may not make your wood go back to normal size, but it can certainly prevent further damage.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “good fences make good neighbors” before. However, you may be wondering what makes a good fence! Wood, vinyl, and aluminum are all excellent choices for fencing in your yard. Each material has its own unique look to complement your Chicagoland home. Whether your purpose for fence installation is privacy, protection, demarcating property lines, or all of the above, you can find the perfect fence. Wood fences offer a classic, rustic look, while vinyl fences are a low-maintenance alternative to wood. If a more modern style appeals to you, ornamental aluminum fencing might be the right choice. Fencing for privacy purposes has gained an unfairly negative reputation. Despite the stigmas about it being an indicator of unsocial tendencies, privacy fencing serves many practical purposes. Read on to find out about three benefits of privacy fencing:
Shows You Care
Many people are reluctant to put up a fence because they are afraid that the sight of them doing so will make them look unsociable. On the contrary, it actually makes you look like a much better neighbor. By putting up a privacy fence, you show your neighbor that your care about their privacy as much as yours.
Protects You From Lawsuits
This is especially important if you have a pool. It only takes one neighbor’s pet (or worse, a child) to wander into your yard and fall in your pool. If something unfortunate happens, all that your neighbor has to do is claim you were negligent in not putting up a fence. If they do that, they could file a lawsuit against you. Even if you don’t have a pool, a fence ensures that unwanted guests cannot wonder onto your property and injure themselves.
Protects Your Family
Whether you have a pool or just kids at play, you never want anyone to have an unauthorized view of your backyard. Not only does a fence protect your property from being scoped out and stolen, but it also protects your family members from peeping eyes. What you do in your backyard is nobody’s business other than your own; erect a tall fence and keep it that way.
At Paramount Fences, we offer a variety of fence products to suit any need. Whether you like wood, iron, aluminum, or even PVC, we offer fencing solutions that are every bit as practical as they are beautiful. Call us at (630) 225-7680 to speak with a sales representative.
